Abstract
310,135. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 27, 1928. Cheque, draft, and like paper; pulp, adding special substances to: paper, treating with special materials; apparatus for treating with liquids and gases.-In the treatment of webs or sheets of paper, textile fabrics, metal foil, and other material with chemicals, colouring matter, or other liquid or gaseous media, the webs or sheets are passed over orifices disposed in the upper surface or cover of one or more boxes filled with the liquid or gaseous medium with which the web or sheet is to be treated. As applied to the wire cloth of a paper machine, the liquid, which may be a staining solution is contained in a box a, Fig. 1, the top of which has orifices such as slits or holes s, the liquid being supplied by a pipe E. A similar arrangement may be applied to the drying section of a paper machine or to paper after manufacture. Several boxes may be used side by side to produce polychrome effects. A cloud effect may be obtained by means of a box a, Fig. 5, having in addition an interior pipe r supplied with a different staining solution, or with water, which issues through nozzles s, the pipe r being reciprocated by an eccentric or the like e. The effects may be varied also by varying the orifices in the top of the box. Examples are described for staining paper with Cotton Black E extra, coating tin foil with an adhesive by passing it over a box containing glue solution, proofing soaped woollen fabric with a solution of aluminium acetate, obtaining a stained paper, the staining of which is of varying intensity either by applying pressure to the paper web locally or by treating it locally with a solution of sodium isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate and then drawing it over a box containing Malachite green and Congo Red R extra respectively, colouring tin foil locally on patches which have been treated with a solution of gelatine by drawing over a box containing a solution of Paper Fast Blue 4.G. extra. Paper pulp may have incorporated therewith potassium ferrocyanide and the moist web produced therefrom drawn over a box containing a solution ot iron chloride. Methyl violet may be added to the pulp and the paper web obtained therefrom treated by this method with a tannin solution to produce a coloured paper stable against water and steam. Paper may be fireproofed by the use of a solution of ammonium sulphate. Stripes of an emulsion of solid paraffin may be applied to paper web at the drying stage to produce safety paper.
