Abstract

607,769. Proofing permeable materials. BUTLER, J. B. July 3, 1944, No. 12623. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1943. [Classes 96 and 140] Fibrous non-woven non-textile material is waterproofed and/or fireproofed by subjecting it to a polymerising solution containing a vinyl compound, e.g.. vinyl acetate, which is polymerised in situ, the amount of solution applied being limited to that absorbed by the fibres and a thin coating round individual fibres so as to leave all the natural prominences before carrying out the polymerisation in situ. The apparatus comprises a zinc-lined trough 2 containing the treating solution 6 in which a steel roller is held resiliently: an apron 7 and a plate glass drain board 8 extend from opposite sides of the trough. A drying arrangement directly above the draining board comprises rods 16 held on a chain guide and support 11, each rod having two clips 18 for holding the treated material. A depending portion 17 on the rods engages in the links of chains 15 which are driven by a crank. The map or sheet to be treated is passed under the roller 4 and is covered with the treating solution and then hung from the clips 18. A composition comprising preferably 10-16 per cent of vinyl acetate, toluol and either methylated spirits or alcohol may be used as the treating solution. Vinyl chloride or chloroprene may also be used as the polymerising substance. Catalysts such as perborates, percarbonates, benzoyl peroxide, hydrochloric acid, aldehydes, halides, e.g., of zinc or tin, may be used, and ultra violet light or water aid polymerisation as do heat, light infra-red light or oxygen. Alternative solvents are benzene, toluene, acetone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene, chloroform or hydrocarbons. The material to be treated may be of cellulose, fibre, papier-mache, paper, card. pasteboard, cardboard, corrugated board, cotton, linen or other fibrous flexible material, and the solution may alternatively be sprayed or brushed on. Drawings or patterns made with colour, charcoal, soft pencil &c. may be fixed on the material by the treament. Ironing or calendering treatment may be given providing the pressure does not remove the " tooth of the surface. Writing on the treated surface can be wiped off with a rag, and painting or drawing in ink, pencil or water-colour removed by chemical or other means. Maps, deeds, drawings, cheques, labels, sheets, cards bearing printing, typing, colouring or writing, containers and moulded articles may be treated. Specifications 572,959 and 572,995 are referred to.
