Abstract

A composite structure comprises at least one layer of crimped continuous synthetic fibres needled to a layer of foamed elastomeric composition. The composite material may be formed from alternating layers of fibres and foamed elastomeric composition. Staple fibres, or woven or non-woven fabrics may be included in the structure. The foamed elastomeric composition may comprise a natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane; the continuous synthetic fibres are preferably polyamide fires and the staple fibres may be made of rayon, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or acrylic fibres. The method of manufacture comprises assembling a layer of crimped continuous synthetic fibres on a surface of a layer of foamed elastomeric composition, and advancing the structure through a needle loom so that substantially the whole of the structure is pierced by the barbed needles; the needling process may be effected from one or both surfaces of the structure. The surface of the structure may then be raised or subjected to a flocking process comprising securing staple fibres to the surface of the structure by means of an adhesive composition applied either before or after the staple fibres. Preferential bending lines may be produced in the needled structure either by stitching or applying pressure and heat to a narrow strip of the structure.ALSO:A flocked composite structure comprises an assembly at least one layer of crimped continuous synthetic fibres needled to a layer of foamed elastomeric composition to which staple fibres are adhered by means of an adhesive composition. Staple fibres, or woven or unwoven fabrics may be included in the structure. The foamed elastomeric composition may comprise a natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane; the continuous synthetic fibres are preferably polyamide fibres and the staple fibres may be made of rayon, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or acrylic fibres. The method of manufacture comprises assembling a layer of crimped continuous synthetic fibres on a surface of a layer of foamed elastomeric composition, and advancing the structure through a needle loom so that p substantially the whole of the structure is pierced by the barbed needles; the needling process may be effected from one or both surfaces of the structure. The surface of the structure is then subjected to a flocking process comprising securing staple fibres to the surface of the structure by means of an adhesive composition applied either before or after the staple fibres. Preferential bending lines may be produced in the needled structure either by stitching or applying pressure and heat to a narrow strip of the structure.
