Abstract

1293009 Laminates SEMPERIT AG 20 Oct 1970 [21 Oct 1969] 49703/70 Heading B5N A porous laminated material is produced by joining a layer of polyurethane foam to a carrier layer of textile fabric, leather or non-woven fleece, by flame cladding and/or spot adhesion, subsequently compressing the foam layer by the application of a pressure of less than 15 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> to increase its density to at least 15 times its original density and subsequently or simultaneously applying a surface layer to the assembly so formed, the polyurethane foam used having a bulk density of less than 40 kg./cm.<SP>3</SP> before compression, a content of 95-98% of open pores and a permeability to air of more than 10 cm.<SP>3</SP>/see. cm.<SP>2</SP> at a test thickness of 1 em. and a pressure difference of 1 mm. Hg and the surface layer having a polyurethane basis and containing no filler material or less than 25% by weight of filler material. Spot adhesion may be effected using rollers with an acrylic resin foam dispersion so that approximately 1000 adhesion points per cm.<SP>2</SP> are obtained. Both sides of a textile carrier layer may be joined to polyurethane foam layers by flame cladding and/or spot adhesion and after compression one side, which is to form the inner side of the laminated material in use, e.g. as a leather substitute, may be roughened on a surface grinding machine. A further layer of textile material or leather may be applied by spot adhesion or flame cladding to the side of the laminated material remote from the side to which the surface layer is applied. During compression further foam layers may be bonded to the first foam layer, the density of these layers before compression decreasing with the distance of the layer from the surface layer. Compression may be effected on a continuously operating vulcanization drum at 170-190‹ C. for 4-8 minutes or in a press at the same temperature for 1-3 minutes. The carrier layer may be a tricot e.g. a double woven tricot or fleec having isotropic properties, a fabric woven from curly synthetic wool made of cellulose, polyester fabric, a coton or viscose rayon fabric or a spunbond fleece. Fibres, e.g. of polyacrylates, polyvinyl alcohol, cotton or viscose rayon, 'may be sewn or spot bonded to at least one of the polyurethane foam layers so that at least 50% of the surface of the fibres is exposed. The surface layer which may be of polyurethane-polyvinyl chloride mixture may be applied by spraying, coating, moulding or pressing on of a foil, conveniently in the continuously operated vulcanization drum, and may have a patterned surface.
