Abstract

1,028,630. Laminates and laminating. COTTON SILK & MAN-MADE FIBRES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. June 15, 1964 [June 15, 1963; Oct. 30, 1963], Nos. 23920/63 and 42757/63. Heading B5N. A heat-reflective fabric, comprising a basic fabric having applied thereto an aluminium or other metal foil made porous by rupturing in the interstices of the fabric as by pressure by a resilient surface, has applied on at least one side of the fabric a resilient material having a bulk density less than the density of the material from which it is formed such as a porous or non-porous foamed material, typical materials being polyester foam with interconnected cells, and polyurethane or rubber foam. An additional layer of fabric may be applied to the remote side of the resilient material. To make the material a web of metal foil roller-coated with adhesive may be laminated to a viscose or other fabric between a hard roller and a rubber-covered roller (applied to the free surface of the foil to press it into the fabric and produce apertures by rupturing), and the composite web so formed may be coated with adhesive on the fabric side and laminated to a foam web between a further pair of rollers. Alternatively, Fig. 3, the foil web 11, coated with adhesive at 63, may be laminated to the fabric web 10 between hard rollers 50, 51, by the intervention of the web 12 of foam material which is then separated from the laminate by a roller 54 transferred to the reverse side of the laminate by rollers 55, 58, and bonded the underside of the laminate (coated with adhesive at 64), between rollers 52, 53. In a further modification a preformed combined web of fabric and resilient material, fed between rollers, is carried back to enter the nip of the rollers again in the same direction, an adhesivecoated metal foil being fed into the nip between the two laminate layers, the resilient layer of the first part of the laminate web thus being used as the resilient material to laminate the foil to the fabric layer at the same time rupturing it by pressure. The fabric layer may be of knitted or other material and a backing fabric of the resilient material may be provided.
