Abstract

[Also in Division B2] A flexible laminate is made by subjecting both faces of a sheet of cellular material to a flame to achieve melting and adhering, simultaneously or consecutively, one molten face to a sheet of compressed cellular material and the other molten face to a sheet of fibrous or cellular material. The flame treated layer may have its cellular structure completely destroyed during melting and act as a hot melt adhesive or it may be sufficiently thick to form a perceptible layer in the laminated product. Suitable cellular materials are foams of natural and synthetic rubber, PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and polyurethane. The compressed layer is preferably constructed of a reticulated polyurethane foam which is compressed prior to, during or after adhesion to a density of 0À3-1À1 g/c.c. The fibrous material may be a non-woven textile felt which includes crimped continuous fibres with or without staple fibres or a woven or knitted fabric. Other materials may be adhered to the exposed faces of the laminate by the use of a flame treated interlayer or by use of adhesives, solvent treatments or heat and pressure. In the examples (1) compressed reticulated polyurethane foam is bonded to a woven nylon fabric by a thin interlayer of reticulated polyurethane foam; (II) a compressed polyester polyurethane foam is bonded to a non-woven felt comprising a layer of polypropylene staple fibres and a layer of nylon filament; (III) the textile surface of laminate of Example (I) is bonded to the felt of Example (II). The laminate may be impregnated with a binder as disclosed in Specifications 1,083,087; 1,136,508; 1,176,161; or coated with a polymer as disclosed in Specifications 1,037,632; 1,220,951 and 1,226,053.
