1347797 Laminated absorbent material MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 20 Jan 1972 [21 Jan 1971] 2787/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions A1 and D1] A resilient, absorbent laminated saddle-pad comprises (i) a resilient and preferably non- absorbent cushioning layer bonded to the fibrous side of (ii) an absorbent sheet comprising a fibrous backing layer surfaced with a selfsupporting thermoplastic film having numerous small holes extending therethrough to ensure porosity, the film and fibrous layer being so bonded that fibres are embedded in the film facing. The cushion layer (i) may be a fabric, nylon web or polyurethane foam, but is preferably a mat of open structure comprising interengaged crinkled filaments which are bonded at mutually-contacting points and having a flattened surface of higher density than the remainder of the mat, whereby adhesion is assisted. Extrusion techniques suitable for the formation of such a mat are disclosed (see Division D1). The filaments may be of polycarbonate, polyolefin, polyester, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide or ionomer resin, and may include plasticizers and other specified additives. The mat may be treated with resins, binders and coating agents, dyed, metallized, mechanically deformed or partially fused and may include metal flakes, fibrous flock and ground cork. The absorbent layer (ii) may comprise a batt or wadding of cotton, rayon or cellulose, which may be needled or felted, bonded by heat and pressure to a polyethylene film, wherein 10-40% of the surface area is covered by the small holes, at the melting point of the plastics. The layers (i) and (ii) are bonded by adhesive, preferably removably using a suitable acrylate, urethane or vulcanized rubber adhesive. The adhesive may include a reinforcing scrim. The absorbent layer (ii) may be disposed of after use; replacement layers may be pre-coated with adhesive and protected by a release liner.
