Abstract
A pad for use between a riding saddle and the horses back consists of a bag partially filled with a granular or powdered substance, such as cork, that can flow to the exact shape of the horses back.
Description
2336092 SADDLEPAD A pad for making a saddle more comfortable for the horse
and also more secure for the rider.
The problems of producing a saddle which fits the horse perfectly are great. Even if the work is done by an expert saddler, the situation is complicated by the fact that the horses back changes shape from time to time with fitness and condition.
Moreover the spine and shoulder muscles flex with every stride the horse takes. Ideally the saddle should be able to accommodate this movement.
However a very simple device can be employed to alleviate these difficulties. A bag partially filled with some sort of powder or granules can be made mi such a way as to act as the well known "bean bag" type of cushion. This is placed between the saddle and the horses back. Any discrepancies in the fit of the saddle are compensated by the flow of the granules.
When the saddle is removed after use, a perfect impression of the under side of the saddle remains on the upper side of the pad and the lower side conforms to the precise shape of the back. Comfort of the horse is greatly increased.
The stability is vastly improved because the saddle ceases to slither about on the back. Sweat is readily absorbed, flexing of the spine accommodated by the softness of the pad. Most i ortant of all bruising and galling of the back are IMP prevented.
Granular cork has been found to be the best fillig for the pad which would typically be about one inch ( 2.5cm) thick and of course the approximate size of the bearing area of the saddle. Construction is of cloth with several internal divisions to keep the granules evenly distributed.
These pads have proved very effective in use, even allowing horses with delicate or injured backs to be ridden without discomfort. They are durable, light, washable, cheap to manufacture and can be made 'm shapes and sizes to suit various equestrian needs.
