Abstract

1415852 Foam-fabric laminates; moulding upholstery HAIRLOK Ltd 22 Jan 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5336/72 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Divisions A4 and B2] A shaped padding or like article of upholstery includes or consists of a covering in which a polymer foam capable in itself of giving full shape retention to the article is bonded directly or indirectly to an outer textile wear layer, said polymer having been made as a foamed sheet not bonded to a textile and having been shaped by thermoforming before or after application of the textile. The textile may be an extensible woven or knitted fabric of crimped or elastomeric yarn, a bonded or felted non-woven fabric, a loop pile fabric or a fabric deposited by electrostatic flocking, and may be of urethane, cotton, rayon, nylon, wool, acrylics, polyester or cellulose acetate, knitted nylon fabrics being preferred. The foam may be of cross-linked closedcell polyethylene or of polyvinyl chloride. The fabric and foam may be bonded by polyurethane adhesive, by flame-treatment possibly with a polyesterurethane foam interlayer, or by a thermofusible powdered ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer or polyethylene. The articles may include a backing foam layer which may be formed in situ on the covering, either by applying a cold-cure polyurethane foam to a vacuumthermoformed covering or by expanding the foam in a heated mould in which the unformed covering is disposed, or may be pre-formed. Its adhesion may be assisted by neoprene rubber or polyurethane adhesive, by corona discharge treatment or by flame treatment possibly with a polyesterurethane foam interlayer. The foam of the covering may be perforated to assist sound absorption into an open-cell cushioning layer. In examples, seats, carpets and trim for cars are prepared.
