Abstract

1,224,471. Foam laminates. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 9 Jan., 1968 [11 Jan., 1967 (2); 21 March, 1967 (2)], Nos. 1431/67, 1433/67, 13078/67 and 13079/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] A flexible laminate is made by superposing a sheet of cellular plastics material having a substantially skeletal structure, the cell membrane being predominantly absent, and a sheet of fibrous material and/or a sheet of cellular plastics material and bonding them together solely by compression at elevated temperature, no pre-treatment having been applied to render the sheets adhesive and the assembly remaining in a compressed state on removal of pressure. The bonding should not destroy cellular properties. The skeletal cellular layer may be obtained by treatment of non-skeletal material, or may be inherently skeletal due to its method of preparation. Pressure of 0À5-100 lb./inch<SP>2</SP> may be applied for at least 0À5 seconds by platens or nip rollers. The interfacial temperature may be 60-350‹ C. The cellular material may be polyurethane, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride; it may be compressed before bonding and may be impregnated, e.g. with a light-stabilizing composition. Fibres may be present in a cellular layer, having been introduced either into the foam-forming mixture or applied to the surface of an open-celled foam, and may comprise crimped or non-crimped polyester, polyamide, cotton, wool or rayon, present in amount 1-30 pts. dry weight per 100 parts cellular material. The fibrous material may comprise knitted, woven or non- woven (e.g. felt) natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. of rayon, cotton, wool, polyester, polyamide or acrylic fibre. The fibres may be staple or continuous and may be crimped. The sheet may be treated with a binder. If two sheets of cellular material are bonded together both sheets may be skeletal, in any case the second sheet is preferably at least partially open-celled; each sheet may have a different resistance to compression. If a fibrous sheet is used it may be assembled between two sheets of cellular material, or a layer of staple fibres may be sandwiched between a layer of crimped continuous fibres and a cellular layer. The laminate may be impregnated with a binder, e.g. a latex of certain specified polymers, preferably a microporous material formed by compounding a latex with a silicone oil, and may be coated with a polyacrylate or polyurethane composition.
