Abstract

1342115 Laminated products JOHNSON & JOHNSON 21 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 16379/71 Heading B5N An adhesive composite article comprises an inherently adhesive mass and a protective covering adhered to a surface of the adhesive mass and formed of an open cellular resiliently deformable polymeric material having 30 to 120 pores per linear inch, whereby under compression the article becomes adhesive at the outer surface of the covering by penetration of the adhesive mass thereto. The open cellular material may be polyurethane-, vinyl-, styrene-butadiene- or rubber-based-foam. Outer foam webs may be applied to both faces of the adhesive layer or one outer layer may be foam and the other of woven cloth, reticulated polymer film or paper. The foam may be impregnated with acrylic latex, thermoplastic polyurethane or ionomer resin and may be reticulated or perforated to provide an open cell structure. The adhesive, which may be pressure sensitive or cohesive and usually has a "Williams" plasticity of 1-8 millimetres, may be an isooctyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, natural rubber or cis-polyisoprene or silicone rubber. It may form a distinct layer between outer foam webs, may be impregnated part way through the foam layers or a third foam layer impregnated throughout with the adhesive may be used. Woven or non- woven cloth, cotton gauze, paper (which may be creped or micro-pleated), reticulated plastics film, rubber, polyurethane, threads, strands, filaments, rovings or fibre glass may be incorporated either within the adhesive layer or between the layer and one or both of the foam sheets. The foam may surround an inner adhesive core to form a rope-like structure. The product may be used as a surgical wrapping, closure or strapping tape and in making floor coverings or plaques, one of the outer webs of the product being replaced by a tile or plaque.
