Abstract
1,203,279. Fibrous laminates. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 22 Dec., 1967 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 58496/67. Headings B5A, B5B and B5N. [Also in Divisions B2, and D1] A cushioning material is made by forming a batt of fully inflated closed cell microcellular filaments (or fibres) which have a thermoplastic adhesive deposited thereon, heating the batt to a temperature below the polymer melt temperature of the filaments sufficient to activate the adhesive and simultaneously compressing and cooling the batt to deactivate the adhesive. The volume fraction of the filamentary material in the consolidated batt is at least 0À4. The microcellular filaments may contain 6-40 g. of inflatant per 100 g. of filamentary polymer. The filamentary polymer may be polyhydrocarbon, polyether, polyvinylic, polyamide, polyurethane or polyester. The adhesive may be ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylenemethacrylic acid copolymer ethylene-methacrylic acid-vinyl acetate terpolymer, polyester, polyolefin, polyamide, neoprene, polyurethane or natural resin. The adhesive can be applied before or after the batt is formed as an aqueous dispersion, in solution, or as a powdered solid. Talc or a silicone detergent can be applied to the batt, e.g. with the adhesive in order to silence noise on cyclic compression. The batt can be compressed by cold rolls, on engraved conveyer belts and a roll, two conveyer belts or between plates at least one of which has a diamond shaped pattern thereon. The batt can be compressed on to an article to form a protective layer around it. The batt can be bonded during the heating and compression stages or in a separate stage to a knitted, non-woven, woven or net-like fabric, foam sheets (e.g. of polypropylene) a metallic foil, paper, or a continuous polymeric film. The batt can be stitched between a scrim and a cotton fabric then heated to form a quilted effect. Microcellular filaments are prepared in Example 1 by extruding a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate, methylene chloride and trichlorotrifluoethane at 190 C. and 525 psig. The filaments are cut into staple fibre then immersed in boiling methylene chloride and perfluorocyclobutane and heated at 125 C. in an oven to inflate the filaments. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,145,932.
