Abstract

937,172. Laminates. J. M. STEVENS. Oct. 11, 1960, No. 34761/60. Class 140. A vibration-absorbing material comprises a unitary structure composed of a plurality of layers of non-heat-activatable fibres bonded together and permeated with a non-fibrous fused plastisol mixture of vinyl resin and plasticizer, the weight proportions of resin and plasticizer being different in at least two adjacent layers to provide a structure having strata of different resonant frequencies of vibration. The weight ratio of fibre to resin may also differ between layers. As shown, a paste 1 of polyvinyl chloride and plasticizer with stabilizers and colorants if desired, is spread over two metal plates 3 with partspherical protuberances 5 on them. Mats 7 of fibre-glass are dry, unsized and unimpregnated and may be woven, needled on to a woven fibre-glass scrim, or with their fibres merely assembled in bat form. One is laid lightly on each paste layer 1. Layers 9 of sisal, jute, fibre-glass or other fibre are unimpregnated and may be in the form of a bat of random fibres or a needled bat with or without a woven backing. Two of them are sized by roller or spray on one side only with a thin layer 11 of polyvinyl chloride paste containing a gasgenerating substance, e.g. ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate or water. Two such layers are placed between the two mats 7 to make the assembly shown. This is placed in a press having heated platens 13 held apart by spacers 17, 19 and 21. Heat is applied for a sufficient time to gel the layers 1, while the mats 7 act as barriers and heat insulators to prevent intermingling of the paste layers, or flow of heat inwards. The spacers 17 are then removed and the press closed, so that the fibreglass of layers 7 is forced into the soft sheets 1, and heat passes to the centre layers 9. This activates the gas-generating substance, and the gas pressure forces the layers 11 into the layers 9 and disperses their material uniformly therethrough. When the gelation of the material 11 is complete, the spacers 19 are removed and the press again tightened to compress the body to its final thickness. Instead of polyvinyl chloride, one may use a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or vinyl maleate.
