Abstract

936,232. Laminates. LONZA Ltd. Dec. 16, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958; Sept. 24, 1959], No. 42813/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. [Also in Group XXXIII] Light-weight laminated structural materials comprising a core sheet of cellular artificial resin and a cover layer on each side thereof are made by forming, on one or both sides of the core sheet, recesses, coating both faces of the core sheet with a liquid hardenable synthetic resin, and applying heat and pressure or vacuum to the outer surfaces of the cover layers, to combine the cover layers and core sheet and cause the liquid hardenable synthetic resin to penetrate the recesses and harden to form reinforcements rigidly connecting the cover layer or layers and the core sheet. The cellular artificial resin may be made of polymers of styrene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or ethylene, of polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chlorideacetate copolymers, or of cellulose acetate. The cover sheets may be of aluminium, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene and mixed polymers thereof, cellulose acetate, cardboard or hardenable resins of the same kind as the reinforcements. The hardenable resins may be polyesters, epoxy resins with or without pblyamides or polystyrene. The cover layers and the reinforcements may have embedded in them fibres, fabrics or mats of glass, nylon or asbestos. The recesses may be cylindrical or conical holes or grooves, and may be made on one or both surfaces of the core sheet, and may extend right through it, or only from one-fifth to one-half of the way through. In one embodiment, they form two series of grooves, one on each face, at right angles to each other, and each penetrating halfway through the core sheet. In another embodiment, two core sheets are used, each has recesses on both faces, and they are connected together by an intermediate reinforcing layer of hardenable synthetic resin. Each face of the core sheet may be covered with a fabric or mat sheet provided with holes in register with the recesses in the core sheet, a liquid hardenable synthetic resin is then applied to these fabric or mat sheets to penetrate therethrough, heat and pressure or vacuum are applied to the outer surfaces of the fabric or mat sheets to form the cover layers and cause the liquid hardenable synthetic resin to penetrate the recesses and form the reinforcements. The laminate or its component sheets may be bent or shaped before, during or after lamination. Specification 694,964 is referred to.
