Abstract

An artificial leather is a combination material, with an outer layer of porous water-proof polyurethane bonded to a substrate of moisture-absorbent textile fibres, and an abrasion-resistant moisture-migrating textile e.g. a fleece or synthetic lining, the layers being bonded with an adhesive which is porous to moisture. Pref. the top layer is a porous water-proof hot-formed aliphatic polyurethane or light-fast aromatic polyurethane produced from 30% w/w in mixed solvent and water. with electrolytes to prevent emulsification and with a viscosity controller such as dimethyl-formamide or tetrahydro-furane. The mixt. is applied to a fibrous substrate, pref. a mixt. of strong fibres (e.g. polyester) plus (e.g.) viscose to ensure swelling, and dried. The other side is then treated with a dirt-repellent material e.g. acetate, polyamide etc. and calendared. Germicides and fungicides can be incorporated in the system. In porosity to moisture, imperviousness to water, mechanical strength and flexibility it is very similar to leather, and can be given leather-like appearance. It is produced in any colour, and is handled and processed like leather.
