Abstract

1380910 Laminated products IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 59211/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A process for making floor coverings having an adherent backing of polyurethane foam comprises forming a layer of flexible polyurethane foam and substantially curing, i.e. spraying on to the back of a flexible floor covering a liquid mixture of ingredients capable of reacting together to form thereon a thin coating of polyurethane foam, disposing the cured foam layer in contact with the back of the covering before the foam coating has set, and subjecting the composite body to a predetermined coolant pressure. The floor covering may be a woven or tufted carpet composed of wool, viscose rayon, polyamide, acrylic or polyester fibres or mixtures thereof. The foam layer may be formed by spraying a foam-forming mixture on to a heated, silicone- or wax-coated cylinder and continuous removal of the layer therefrom with optional embossing and additional heating-alternatively, the mixture may be sprayed on to a porous glass-fibre tissue or paper reinforcement which ultimately becomes an intermediate layer of the carpet product. The foam coating may be applied to the foam layer as well as to the covering by provision of a spraying device at the nip of these layers (Fig. 3). Pressure is exerted on the bonded layer by means of an upper endless belt pressed by means of a platen or series of rollers against the composite and a fixed lower support.
