Abstract

1,027,691. Laminates and laminating. PLASTIC TEXTILE ACCESSORIES Ltd. Feb. 4, 1963 [Feb. 13, 1962], No. 5556/62. Heading B5N. A method of forming reinforced configured articles, i.e. other than flat or simply curved articles, comprises assembling together a sandwich of layers comprising one or more internal layers of a heat-softenable plastic net, in between layers of a coherent fibrous material, laminating layers together in the flat by heat and pressure, and transferring the laminate so formed while still hot or after reheating to an unheated mould of the desired configuration to shape and set the article under pressure. Suitable fibrous materials are textile fabric or glass fibre, and the sandwich assembly may be needled before laminating. After moulding, the multi-ply article may be treated, by spraying or dipping, with a settable adhesive such as liquid polyester or acrylic resin, and cured or allowed to cure into a rigid reinforced impermeable article. The initial laminating may be by passing continuous webs through heated rollers or by pressing discrete lengths in heated plattens. The plastic net may be woven, knitted, welded, loose strips or filaments, or foraminated or expanded sheet. Articles include baths, containers, boats and clothing articles.
