Abstract

1,016,551. Felt. DUNLOP RUBBER CO Ltd. Feb. 27, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9077/62. Heading D1R. A felt comprises a needled mat of interpenetrated substantially aligned continuous man-made fibres, the interpenetration of the fibres being in the nature of an intermingling in three dimensions produced by laying the crimped continuous manmade fibres under tension and subsequently releasing the tension. Fibres or filaments having a potential crimp may be assembled and the crimp developed in the filaments. As shown, warp sheets 1, 2 of crimped twistless yarns 3 are condensed by lease rods 10 of a regulator 11 and the resultant tow passes around driven rollers 12,13 and spreads as it passes therearound. The tow 4 passes over an arcuate spreading rod 14 or cambered roller and then through a chamber 15 having infra-red heaters 16 to develop the relaxation of the tow so that the yarns intermingle but still remain substantially aligned. The resultant mat 5 passes over a feed apron 17 and is needled by a reciprocating head 18. Take-up rollers 20, 21 together with the apron 17 are driven at a slower speed than the rollers 12,13. Two or webs may be superposed prior to needling and continuous filament yarn, e.g. nylon or polyethylene terephthalate, may be traversed over the surface to produce pattern effects. The mats may be needled on to a base sheet of knitted or woven fabric, e.g. woven cotton or nylon, or of a bonded non-woven felt, or of syntheitc plastic or rubber. Binding agents, e.g. thermoplastic synthetic resins, may be added to the assembly before, during or after needling. Needle-loom carpeting may be produced by applying a binding agent or sheet over the base sheet after needling. The felt may be calendered. In one example, four felts are superposed, moistened with water and pressed on a heated platen press. Specified filaments are rayon, nylon, nylon 66 of trilobal cross-section, polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene.
