Abstract

986, 357. Pile fabrics. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS 8 CO. March 4, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1963], No. 8581/63. Heading D1K. A pile fabric suitable for carpets and imitation furs comprises an intermingled mass of synthetic or artificial organic polymeric filaments which have a three-dimensional crimp anchored in an adhesive layer in a randomly spaced and angled manner. The average filament denier is from 2 to 25 and pile fibre density is between 0. 5 and 3.21b per cubic foot with 5000 to 16,000 filaments per square inch and the ratio of the average extended length of the filaments to the height of the pile is between 1.3 3 and 3.0. The filaments may be of a wide range of polymers and the adhesive layer may be of chloroprene rubber, elastomeric foams and sponges, butadiene-styrene rubber or one of a number of resins which can be thermoset. Backings for the fabric may be woven such as burlap, canvas and nylon scrim, or knitted such as nylon tricot, or non-woven synthetic materials, metal foils, or rigid sheets of metal, ceramics, or wood. The fabric may be prepared by treating a mass of the filaments in a mould with a binding composition, cutting sheets therefrom of the desired thickness, applying the same to an adhesive layer and then curing and or drying to solidify the adhesive layer. One or more backing layers may be applied while the adhesive is still tacky. The pile is then treated to remove all the binding composition but leaving the pile secured to the adhesive layer.
