Abstract
1,198,819. Knitting; finishing fabrics. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 Oct., 1968 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 43187/67. Headings D1K and D1S. An imitation lamb or sheepskin fabric comprises a pile made from melt spun quenched drawn synthetic aromatic polyester fibres which have a denier of four or more and a resilient helical crimp. The pile may be formed by weaving or knitting in tufts of helically crimped polyethylene terephthalate fibres with a tenacity of 2 to 6 grams per denier, an extension to break of 10 to 60%, an initial modulus of 20 to 40 grams per denier, a crimp index of 15 to 70%, a crimp level of 2 to 13 crimps per straight inch, a mean rate of change of instantaneous modulus between 5% and 10% per extension, of 90 to 160 grams per denier and a denier of 4 to 18 and an assemtry of refractive index of not less than 1.10<SP>-3</SP> measured across the width of the fibre. The fabric is given a finishing treatment after it has been sheared to the required length to give it a pebble like appearance. This is achieved by conventional textile operations such as hot air tumbling, winch processing or even stentering with a suitable down draft of hot air in order to give the required degree of interlocking or coalescing of the fibres into pebble like clumps. If desired the fabric may be subjected to a further treatment such as polishing the pile fibres with high gloss rapidly rotating heated cylinders. This has the effect of reducing the size of the clumps and the width of the cleavage.
