Abstract
850,288. Agglutinated fibrous materials; laminates. DRELICH, A. H. Jan. 11, 1957 [Jan. 11, 1956], No. 1186/57. Classes 96 and 140. A washable non-woven fabric comprises a layer of overlapping intersecting fibres lying in positions generally parallel to the central plane of the fabric and extending in a plurality of diverse directions parallel to the said plane, the fibres being closely assembled through the thickness of the fabric and loosely assembled (relative to their spacing through the thickness) parallel to the median section of the fabric forming myriad small interstices between them, and a multiplicity of substantially uniformlydistributed and diversely oriented heat-fused rods of bonding material lying in position generally parallel to the plane of the fabric and having a transverse cross-dimension of the order of 5 to 10 times the average diameter of the fibres and an average long dimension of at least <SP>1</SP>/ 32 inch, the rods being generally closely spaced but sufficiently apart to provide a multiplicity of unbonded fibre areas between the rods so that substantially each fibre is bonded by a rod of bonding material a plurality of times along its length. By the term median section " is meant the locus of all points located midway between the fabric surfaces. The binder rods may be distributed amongst the fibres during or after formation of the layer. The layer may be formed by carding, garnetting, air-laying or paper-making techniques. Individual layers formed by one or more of these techniques may be laminated to provide a thicker layer for conversion into the fabric of the invention. Specified fibrous materials are regenerated cellulose, viscose rayon, nylon, cotton. Specified binder materials are plasticized cellulose acetate, plasticized ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polymethane, polystyrene, polyvinylidine cyanide and nylon. By rods is meant elongated binding members which may be in the form of cut lengths of monofilaments. The bonds may be formed in the fabric by distributing the rods in the fibrous layer and then fusing them and causing them to flow by application of heat and pressure to embed a large number of fibres. Heat and pressure may be applied to the rod-containing layer by placing it between heated platens in a press, passing it between heated rollers or between pressure rollers in an oven or first heating the layer and then running it while hot between unheated calender rollers. As shown, Fig. 1 is an enlarged schematic plan view of a portion of a fabric according to the invention and Fig. 2 is an enlarged schematic sectional view along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fibres 11, extending in a plurality of diverse directions in planes generally parallel to the median section of the fabric are bonded by a multiplicity of spaced substantially solid rod bands 12 extending through the thickness of the fabric substantially from one surface to the other. The fibre segments between the bands provide a multiplicity of fluffy web areas 14.
