Abstract

A bonded non-woven fabric is produced by interposing a fibrous interlay between two fibrous webs, the fibres of the interlay being selected so that at least some of the fibres are less tenaciously bonded with a given bonding agent than those of the fibrous webs, impregnating the composite web with this bonding agent, and after setting the agent, splitting the web along the plane of the fibrous interlay. The residual fibres of the interlay may provide a soft texture to one surface of each of the resultant fabrics; if this is not required the fibres may easily be removed by brushing. The bonding agent may be viscose in which case the fibrous webs may be of viscose rayon fibres and the interlay may consist of or include fibres of polyesters, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, cellulose triacetate or polypropylene. If the selected bonding agent is a natural or synthetic rubber the fibrous webs may be formed of fibres of polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylates or polymethracrylates and the interlay may include or consist of viscose rayon, polypropylene or polyethylene fibres. If the selected bonding agent is an epoxy resin the fibrous webs may be formed from fibres of viscose rayon and the interlay may include or consist of cellulose acetate fibres. Splitting of the composite web is facilitated by consolidating the individual fibrous webs, e.g. by winding up with paper sheet followed by unwinding. Specification 827,370 is referred to.
