Abstract

1370786 Resin-impregnated glass fibre laminates MARLING INDUSTRIES Ltd and J H JAKES 28 Nov 1972 [8 Nov 1971 1 Dec 1971 5 June 1972] 51842/71 55696/71 and 26058/72 Heading B5N Mouldable sheet material comprises a mass of incompletely polymerized thermosetting resin 1 containing randomly-arranged glass fibres 2 and including a knitted glass fibre fabric web 3 (K) within the sheet and spaced from the surfaces thereof. As shown, the fibres 2 comprise fine fibres 2a (F) and coarse fibres 2b (C), which are preferably in the form of separate bats. Other specified combinations (Figs. 4-6/8 not shown) are FKCKF, FCKC, FCKCF and FKCKCKF. The constituent bats of fibres 2 and web(s) 3 may be needled together or may be bonded by polyester resin applied in powder form and heat-set or applied in solution form. The thermosetting resin 1 may be polyester or epoxy resin applied in powder form. The web 3 may be warp- or weft-knitted. Strippable layers 4a, 4b of polyethylene, polyvinyl alcohol, regenerated cellulose or paper surfaced with such materials may be provided. The sheet material is shaped by a die or an inflated bag and is preferably cured by heating in the mould. The fibrous reinforcing assembly to which the resin 1 is applied is claimed in Specification 1,370,787.
