Abstract

1,157,621. Laminates; moulding reinforced articles. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 18 Aug., 1966 [25 May, 1965], No. 22188/65. Headings B5A and B5N. A process for producing a laminated sheet includes the steps of impregnating a mat, cloth or filaments of glass fibre 14 with a thermosetting plastics material 15, passing the impregnated mat, cloth or filaments through a heated die 16 and bonding a sheet of thermoplastic material 11 to the resulting reinforced solidified thermosetting plastics material by the application of pressure either simultaneously, by means of the die 16, or subsequently by means of rollers: see the figure accompanying the Complete Specification (not shown). The thermosetting resin 15 may be a polyester resin. The thermoplastic sheet 11 is preferably polypropylene but may be polyvinyl chloride or polythene. The sheet 11 may be first bonded to a sheet of woven material 12 of glass fibres and polypropylene fibres by heat and pressure applied by rollers 13. Alternatively, the sheet 11 may be bonded directly to the cured impregnated fibres 14 after passage of the latter through the die 16, and after application of adhesive to a surface of the sheet 11, by means of pressure rollers. The adhesive may be an epoxy resin contact adhesive. The heated die 16 may have cooled inlet and outlet portions to prevent premature curing of the thermosetting resin, and the die opening, instead of being flat, may be of channel or other shape to produce a product of corresponding section.
