Abstract

822,609. Laminates. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. Jan. 9, 1957 [Feb. 3, 1956], No. 3463/56. Class 140. Laminated articles are produced by a vacuum-forming process in which two or more superimposed sheets of thermoplastic material are used, each sheet other than the one farthest from the mould being perforated so that air can be withdrawn from between the sheets during the moulding operation. The thermoplastic material may be modified polystyrene, e.g. toughened by natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride or cellulose acetate, and the sheets may be of different materials or thicknesses. The perforations may be small and may be made with a needle. They may be in a part of the sheet or sheets which in the finished laminated article can be trimmed off. An interlayer, which does not prevent the sheet farthest from the mould from being drawn on to the mould may be inserted between the sheets before moulding. The interlayer may provide strength or may be ornamental and may be of, e.g., paper, fabric, metal foil, filaments of metal or polymers, glass fibre mats or woven glass cloth. In a preferred form of the invention the interlayer is ornamental, the thermoplastic sheet on one side of it is transparent and that on the other side is opaque, the sheet farthest from the mould may be of P.V.C. or toughened polystyrene and the other or others of transparent cellulose acetate. A bonding agent, e.g. an adhesive, particularly a resin adhesive, or one of several specified solvents for the thermoplastic materials, may be employed to bond the layers together, or the laminµ may be bound together by external means or by pressure at the edges. In a modification, instead of forming the superimposed sheets simultaneously on the mould, a sheet other than that farthest from the mould is separately drawn on to the mould and is perforated after it has been drawn, and another sheet is subsequently drawn on to the perforated sheet. If necessary this sheet may then be perforated and other sheets added to the laminate in the same way. Interlayer material can be inserted between the moulded sheets either before the second sheet is drawn, or if the sheets are not bonded together, after the forming is completed.
