Abstract

1,256,406. Laminates. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 12 June, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 29771/69. Heading B5N. A laminate comprises a net formed of plastics material and at least one layer of a sheet material comprising crepe tissue, non-woven fabric, paper or film on each side of the net and laminated therewith, the net having two sets of filaments of polymeric plastics material which is molecularly oriented with respect to the filaments, each set having the filaments therein substantially parallel to each other, the filaments of one set intersecting the filaments of the other: set and the filaments of both sets being integral with each other at the intersections of the net so that stresses applied to the laminate are substantially equally distributed to all of the filaments throughout the laminate to produce a uniformly stable laminate. The net may be formed of filaments which are extruded and cross eachother while in the molten stage to produce a net of plastics material filaments or it may be a film from which areas are punched out or perforated or removed. The sets of filaments of the net may cross at approximately 90 degrees or in a diamond pattern. After formation the net may be oriented longitudinally, transversely orbiaxially in one or two steps and then bonded to the layers of sheet material by coating the net or both layers of sheet material with an adhesive, e.g. of the ethyl vinyl acetate type which is an acetoxylated polyethylene copolymer; and putting the layers together or by putting the layers together and applying an adhesive which will strike through all of the layers. Alternatively, if thermoplastic silanes are used in the outer layers or with other thermoplastic materials, the layers of sheet material may be secured to the net by the application of heat and pressure. The net may be made from polyethylene, polypropylene or a polyamide.
