Abstract

1331817 Laminates JOHNSON and JOHNSON 19 April 1971 [26 Jan 1970] 20374/71 Heading B5N A laminated fabric having high bulk, a soft crumpled appearance and three-dimensional surface interest is made by forming a grid of intersecting filaments of a thermoplastic synthetic resin 14, said grid having potential shrinkage properties of at least 3% in each direction, placing a layer of fibrous material 12, 18 on one or both sides thereof, adhering the fibrous layers to the grid to form a laminate and heating the laminate to activate the potential shrinkage properties of the grid to cause it to shrink whereby portions of the layers of fibrous materials adhered to the grid and facing each other in the open areas of the grid become crumpled and buckled. The grid may be made of a polyethylene, especially high density polyethylene; polypropylene, preferably isotactic polypropylene; polyamides; polyesters or polyacrylics. The fibrous webs may be of cotton, rayon, polyamides, acrylics, monacrylics, polyester, polyolefin, cellulose ester, wool, mohair, silk fibres or tissue paper. The fibrous layer may have a film or sheet of polymer, e.g. polyester applied to its outer surface. In one embodiment fibrous webs 22, 28 and a plastics grid 24 are passed between pressure rollers 31, 32 to form a laminate and then through an apparatus 36 which rearranges the fibres to form a bundled fabric and mechanically intertwine and wrap the fibres around the filament of the grid. The laminate is then passed through an adhesive applying device 34 and then through a heater 35 where the adhesive is dried and the grid is shrunk. In another embodiment, adhesive 49 is applied to both sides of the grid 48 by passage through a part 50 and the grid is then laminated to fibrous webs 42, 44 before passage through the heater 60. A wide variety of binders are specified.
