Abstract

1,262,277. Coated products. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 May, 1969 [12 Aug., 1968], No. 38379/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B5] A flexible wallcovering comprises an unperforated layer of water-permeable paper bonded to a perforated thermoplastic back layer, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, wherein fibres from the paper layer extend into or protrude through the perforations. The perforations may be formed after bonding by pressing heated cylindrical rods into the back layer, fibre tufts being pulled into the holes on withdrawing the rods. The paper layer may be printed or embossed with a design, or may be bonded at its front to a polystyrene foam or coated with polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or polyvinyl acetate; a further layer bearing a design may be applied over a foam. The back layer may be bonded to the paper layer by extrusion, calendering, bonding a preformed film, or knife-spreading a powder or paste. Polyethylene backing film may be oxidised at its surface to assist adhesion, e.g. by corona discharge, flame treatment or extrusion at 300‹C.
