776,179. Laminates. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Sept. 24, 1954 [Sept. 24, 1953], No. 27647/54. Class 140. A flat or curved laminate comprises fibrous layers, including at least one fabric and at least one mat of fibres, permeated and consolidated by a cross-linked polymerization product, there being at least one outer layer of fibres of a thermoplastic material. The thermoplastic material may be a mat of fibres, a woven or knitted fabric, of cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate or a mixed ester, polyamide, polyester, polyurethane, or polyaminotriazole. The mat of thermoplastic fibres may be partly coalesced by hot-pressing while wet as described in Specification 618,178, or the mats, or the fibres thereof, may be coated with silicones, epoxy resins, or polyamides to improve the bond of the resin to the fibres. The inner layers may be of glass fibre, e.g. a mat of glass fibres positioned between layers of glass fibre fabric, to the outer surfaces of which mats of thermoplastic fibres are applied. Alternatively a mat of cellulose acetate fibres may be sandwiched between layers of cellulose acetate woven fabric, and, if desired outer layers of cellulose acetate fibre mat may be applied; or layers of high-tenacity cellulose acetate fabric may be applied on each side of a glass fibre mat. The product may be translucent, or dyes or pigments may be incorporated in the binder or in the thermoplastic fibres. The binder may be an unsaturated polyester to which a polymerizable liquid may be added, a polymerizable unsaturated alcohol ester of an unsaturated acid, a polymerizable unsaturated alcohol polyester of a polybasic acid, or a polyhydric alcohol ester of an unsaturated acid. Lists of each type of binder are given, typical examples being ethylene or diethylene glycol maleate resin with styrene or vinyl acetate, a polyester resin from ethylene glycol, maleic and phthalic anhydrides with diallyl phthalate, vinyl acrylate, diallyl carbonate, ethylene glycol diacrylate. A polymerization initiator may be added before impregnating the fibrous layers with the binder.
