Abstract

1,206,010. Paper-maker's felt. M. KINOSHITA and T. IIZUKA. 6 Feb., 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 5785/68. Heading D1R. A felt for paper machines comprises a foraminous meshwork backing having an open space ratio (as defined) in the range 10-50% and a mat of non-woven fibres having tufts extending through the meshes of said backing to secure said mat to said backing and being substantially confined to the meshes, the mat being consolidated into a felt. The open space ratio P(%) is defined as:- where a=(diameter of warp in mm) x (number of warps per 50 mm) and b=(diameter of weft in mm) x (number of wefts per 50 mm). The process for producing such a felt comprises forming a non-woven mat containing shrinkable and/or fullable fibres over one or both faces of a foraminous meshwork backing having an open space ratio as above, needling the mat to the backing so that tufts of the mat are disposed in the meshes of the backing, the shrinkable and/or fullable fibres being shrunk and/or filled before the mat is laid on the backing and the distance between the warps and the wefts, whichever is the smaller, being in the range 0.2 to 4 times the diameter of the felting needle. The mat may consist of synthetic, natural or regenerated fibres or mixtures thereof, and the backing may consist of a meshwork of synthetic and/or regenerated fibres or a meshwork of metal wires. The backing or the mat may be impregnated with binding agents e.g. synthetic rubber latices or polyurethane, polyamide, polyvinyl and epoxy resins. In a preferred embodiment of the process, the mat is partially shrunk and/or fulled before being laid upon the backing, and is thereafter fully shrunk and/or fulled. The shrinking ' may be effected by heat and may take the form of a crimping of the fibres.
