Abstract

A process for making a non-woven fabric comprises laying together a number of pieces of fibrillatable plastics film and needling the assembled pieces. The film may be cross-laid i.e. fibrillatable in the weft direction, or parallel-laid, or both. The fibrillatable film is preferably made from polyethylene, polypropylene or polyacrylic material. The film may be made from blends of compatible or incompatible polymers. The needled fabric may be bonded as by fusion of the fibrillated film or by addition of solvents or adhesives. The pieces of fibrillatable film may be assembled with a web of fibrous material e.g. polyacrylic or rayon; such a web may be placed on both sides of the film. The film may be needled to a cotton scrim.
