Abstract

1,117,430. Non-woven fabric. KENDALL CO. 18 Nov., 1966 [15 Dec., 1965; 28 Feb., 1966; 6 July, 1966], No. 51701/66. Heading D1R. [Also in Division B5] A non-woven fabric has a stress-strain curve exhibiting a single inflection point and comprises an array of unspun and unwoven textile length fibres 10 (Fig. 2) bonded by a film of polymeric material 12, the film forming a continuous phase in which the fibres are distributed substantially uniformaly throughout at least 80% of the thickness of the film and being the sole bonding medium for the fibres. The polymeric material may be a thermoplastic material or a material which, initially thermoplastic, becomes thermoset as a result of bonding treatment. Preferably the film is undrawn and unorientated. It may be polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, a polyester or a thermoset polyacrylic film. The film and a continuous layer of fibres are bonded by calendering between heated rollers Alternatively two layers of fibres may be calendered between the heated rollers with the film sandwiched between. If a thermosetting film is used it may be preheated before the calendering operation. The film may he impervious or may have air bubbles formed therein which are ruptured during calendering to render the film impervious. The fibres may be orientated longitudinally of the direction of travel and if two fibrous layers are used the fibres of the second layer are orientated transversely of the direction of travel during calendering. The fibres may be crimped and may consist of cotton, rayon, cellulose acetate. polyester, polyamide, polyimide, polypropylene or polyacrylic resin. A blend of fibres may be used to form the fibrous array. The fibrous layers can be formed by garnetting carding or air-laying. The film 40 (Fig. 8) may be perforated as at 42 so that during bonding the fibres 44 fill the perforations. The fabric may be sprayed with adhesive to form an adhesive tape. It may also be used as a packaging material.
