Abstract

1,186,214. Needled laminate. BREVETEX S.A. 26 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 24587/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A method of forming a textile sheet material comprises making a plurality of incisions in a fibrillatable foil at an angle to the direction of fibrillation, placing a layer of material e.g. a loose fibrous web, adjacent to the foil and needling the composite to fibrillate the foil. The fibrillatable foil may be of polypropylene or may have a vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer added. The loose fibrous web is preferably of polypropylene fibres. In a preferred embodiment, the fibrillatable film with incisions therein is passed to a cross-lapping device where a fleece of fibres is laid on the foil. The composite then passes to a needling apparatus which pierces the foil and pushes some of the fibres therethrough, the foil being thus partially fibrillated. The needled structure is then reversed and passed to a further needling apparatus which further fibrillates the foil and pushes the fibrils back into the structure so that the fleece fibres and the fibrils are intermingled. In a further embodiment, a fibrillatable foil is placed on either side of a layer of dry free leaves or paper.
