Abstract

1312312 Needled fleece; cutting pile loops CARL FREUDENBERG 27 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 40340/71 Headings D1R D1K and D1S A carpet having a cut pile is produced by needling a fleece with needles having a cutting edge, so that fibres are carried through to one surface to form loops, the cutting edge of the needles pressing against a backing support adjacent said surface to cut the loops as they are formed. The backing surface may comprise a layer of paper, cardboard or plastics material unwound from a roll and carried over a rigid support which the needles do not contact. Preferably the needles are unbarbed, have a cutting edge of 0.5 to 2 mm. and are mounted in a uniform staggered arrangement in the needle board. The fleece may be prestablised by needling with barbed needles or by fusion of thermoplastic monocomponent or multicomponent fibres in the fleece. A binder may be applied to the back of the carpet after pile formation so that it extends two thirds of the way through the fleece.
