Abstract

1,029,278. Laminates; sheet forming. CARL FREUDENBERG. Nov. 15, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961], No. 43276/62. Headings B5A and B5N. A method of making a moulded article, e.g. a brassiere, comprises uniting at least one non- woven fibre batt to a heat-mouldable plastic foil by needling, with consequential perforations in the foil, and then moulding the composite material under heat to the desired shape. Fibre batts may be applied to one or both faces of the foil which may have additional perforations made in it either before or after laminating. The layers may be partially united by heat and pressure before needling and several fibre batts may be united by needling before application to the foil. The fibre batts may be of straight or crimped fibres of one or more kinds, and examples of a wide range of natural and synthetic fibres are given including animal, vegetable, mineral, many types of synthetic, cellulosic and protein fibres. Fleeces may be formed by carding or flocculation using a suction drum, several thin fleeces being superimposed with the fibres of one at an angle to those of another to form a batt. The foil may be a vinyl or acrylic polymer or copolymer, a polyester, a cellulose ester, a polyurethane, a polyolefin or halogenated polyolefin, examples being given, a preferred material being polypropylene. The foil may be oriented. The batt on one side of the foil may be calendered smooth and the material shaped by vacuum moulding or deep drawing, e.g. using a silicone-rubber blanket. The composite material may be pre-shrunk by steam treatment.
