Abstract

1,152,419. Laminates. FOSS MFG. CO. Inc. 7 Feb., 1967 [10 Feb., 1966], No. 5713/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A fibrous web is made by introducing a liquid suspension of particles, which contain thermoplastic material and expanding agent therefor, into the interstices of the web and thereafter expanding the particles with the expanding agent, e.g. by heating. The thermoplastic material may be selected from polyolefins, polyvinylic compounds, polyacrylic compounds, cellulose derivatives and synthetic rubber. The web can be formed by garnetting a blended web of viscose and polyester fibres, cross-lapping, needling to 2À5 inches at 780 strokes per min, then needling the web so-formed onto a 32 x 28 count woven scrim to 5/8 inch at 260 penetrations per square inch with ball point swaged barb needles, then needling a second preneedled web to the other side of the scrim to 9/16 inch at 446 penetrations per inch. A rubbery material, e.g. carboxylated polystyrene-butadiene latex can also be introduced into the web. The web can be saturated with a suspension of the polymer and particles and passed through nip rolls and cured by heating on curing cans or in a mould. In Example 4 the needled web impregnated with polymer and expandable particles is laminated to leather in an embossing mold.
