Abstract

1,171,761. Surgical dressings. T. J. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [19 Oct., 1965], No. 44161/65. Heading A5R. [Also in Division D1] A wadding for a surgical dressing comprises a mass of fibres formed into a non-woven web and mechanically consolidated by needle loom punching from 25-80% of the fibres being hydrophobic fibres and the remainder being hydrophilic, the wadding having a compression modulus of 0.59 to 2.0 at 0.35 p.s.i. and a density of from 1.0 to 3.5 1b/cu. ft. at 0.01 p.s.i. The fibres have deniers of from “ to 50 and preferably staple lengths of from “ to 2¢ inches. The needle run punching may be carried out either to an equal degree on both sides of the wadding or from one side only to give a density gradient. The hydrophobic fibres may be made from polyethylene, polypropylene, a polyamide, a polyester, polyacrylonitrile, a polyacrylic or polymethacrylic resin or a cellulose ester. The hydrophilic fibres may be cotton or regenerated cellulose. The wadding may be united to a porous sheet, film, or net of a polyethylene material.
