[Also in Divisions A3 and D1] An absorbent dressing for surgical or menstrual use comprises an absorbent core enveloped by, and in intimate contact with, a non-woven cover which consists of a fleece of synthetic fibres bonded together autogenously (i.e. without a bonding agent) at discrete and spaced-apart areas which collectively constitute not more than 35% of the area of the fleece, and fibres having a wet stiffness index of not less than 20 grams per denier at 3% elongation and a moisture regain of not more than 2% at 70‹F. and 65% relative humidity. The fibres may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polyvinyl, polyacrylic or modified polyacrylic fibres. The absorbent dressing may be an abdominal 'pad, a drainage pad, an incontinence pad, an obstetrical pad or a sanitary napkin. Reference is made, in regard to autogenous bonding of fibres, to Specifications 1093710 and 1098740.
