Abstract

1414988 Tampons RAPID-AMERICA CORP 28 Sept 1972 44902/72 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B5 and Dl] A tampon 43 comprises an elongated generally cylindrical body composed of at least two absorbent layers 38 one of which comprises absorbent filaments some of which extend through openings provided in the other layer to form an integrated absorbent composite, some of said openings which filaments therethrough extending transverse to the length of the tampon. The composite may comprise a cellulose crepe wadding layer 3 with openings 4 through which extend filaments 2', 2" of rayon material. The filaments may be displaced so that either substantially the same amounts of filaments are on each side of the wadding 3 or more remain on one side of wadding 3. In a modified composite filamentary material is located between two other layers and filaments are displaced through each other layer. The composite is made by feeding filamentary material 15 and a web 18 to a needle punching machine where barbed needles 23 are reciprocated through the superimposed layers thereby transferring filaments through the web 18. Cotton cheese cloth and cellulose wadding may be used. Tampons are constructed using two layers of the composite material separated by a gauze layer.
