Abstract

818,416. Bonded fibrous fabric. SPAHR, R. J., SUMNER, J. K., and YEDLICK, E. J. Dec. 28, 1955 [Dec. 28, 1954], No. 37169/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. A non-woven fabric comprises a loosely assembled web of over-lapping intersecting fibres bonded throughout the web or at substantial areas thereof with a copolymer of vinyl acetate and an alkyl acrylate, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and an alkyl methacrylate, or a tripolymer of vinyl acetate, an alkyl acrylate and an alkyl methacrylate, the alkyl radical containing less than nine carbon atoms, said binder material comprising at least about 70 per cent of vinyl acetate based upon the weight of the total monomers. Suitable webs may be formed by cording, gometting or airdeposition. The fibres in the web may be oriented predominantly in one direction or the web may be substantially isotropic. Specified fibres are cotton, jute, ramie, wool, viscose, rayon, cuprammonium, cellulose acetate, nylon -and polyethylene, alone or in combination with one another. The binder may be deposited in the web by printing, spraying or impregnating. The adhesive bonding material may be deposited in ring-like spaced areas or diagonally crossing lines. Specifications 674,779 and 677,928, [both in Group IX], are referred to.
