Abstract

1308097 Bonded fabrics; paper; flame retardant materials MONSANTO CO 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 27097/71 Headings D1P D1R and D2B [Also in Division C3] A flame retardant bonded non-woven fabric contains an ammonium polyphosphate flame retardant of specified composition and as binder an interpolymer containing 5 to 30% by weight of ethylene, 30 to 95% by weight of vinyl chloride and 0.1 to 10% of a polar monomer which is at least partly acrylamide, or the interpolymer derived by partial or complete hydrolysis of the amide groups. The fibres may be wood, jute, sisal, hemp, cotton, cotton linters, silk, mohair, cashmere, asbestos, wool, glass, cellulose acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylonitrile and copolymers thereof, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate or nylon or a mixture thereof. Specified mixtures are wood/ cotton, glass/asbestos, glass/wood, glass/cellulosic in a ratio of 1:10 to 10:1, wood/nylon, wood/rayon wood/polyester, the ratio of natural/synthetic fibre being 1:20 to 20:1. The fabric may be airlaid e.g. from cut continuous filaments with the aid of suction onto a conveyor or shaped screen, e.g. a hat shaped cone, wet laid, carded or garnetted to give webs with the fibres orientated in the machine direction, or cross-laid to orient the fibres at right angles to the machine direction, formed by direct spraying of molten or dissolved polymer, deposited electrostatically, or spun-bonded from continuous filaments. The binder may be sprayed onto the fibres as they fall onto the conveyor, but preferably the preformed web is immersed in an aqueous dispersion of the binder and retardant, which may be foamed, foamable (with sodium oleate) or contain a silicone antifoaming agent. A specified phosphate plasticiser may be included. A list of unsaturated polar co-monomers is given. The product is calendered and heated to fuse the binder and to cross-link it if a sulphurcontaining crosslinking agent is included.
