Abstract
1487378 Non-flammable fibrous product; non-woven fabric ROHM & HAAS CO 24 Sept 1974 [21 Jan 1974] 41473/74 Headings DIP and D1R Non-flammable woven or non woven fibrous products are prepared by blending polyester fibres with halogen-containing polymer fibres and then applying a coating or binder of a non-flammable polymer optionally containing a flame retardant synergist e.g. colloidal antimony oxide. 65-95 wt.% of polyester fibres are blended with 5-35 wt.% of fibres of halogen containing polymer (e.g. vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene bromide or PTFE) and the blend coated or bonded with the following copolymer. The copolymer comprises (a) 60-90% by weight of units of one or more halogen containing monomers e.g. vinyl or vinylidene chloride: (b) 0.5-5 wt.% units of one or more selfreactive monomers e.g. of N-methylolacrylamide, N-methylolmethacrylamide and N- methylol-4-pentenoguanamine; (c) 0-5% of a non-self-reactive comonomer containing active H and (d) 9.5-40% of non-reactive units e.g. of one or more of C 1 -C 18 alkyl acrylate, C 1 -C 18 alkyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, styrene and acrylonitrile. Flame retardant plasticizers e.g. brominated phosphate esters or phosphonates may be employed. The product is then dried and cured. The products may be woven or non-woven e.g. an air laid, carded or garnetted web, and may be used in curtains, draperies and upholstery stuffing. In examples, fibrefill blend random array garnet web prepared from blends of polyethylene terephthalate fibre and (a) vinyl chloride polymer fibre (Leavil, RTM) (b) modacrylic fibre (vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile-Verel, RTM) and (c) vinyl chloride/vinyl alcohol copolymer fibre (Cordelan-RTM) are treated with one of two emulsion copolymers on one side, dried and re-treated on the other, dried and cured at 300F. First emulsion copolymer comprises 66% vinylidene chloride, 30% ethyl acrylate. and 4% of acrylamide and N-methylol acrylamide in approx. equimolar ratio. Second emulsion copolymer comprises 85% vinylidene chloride, 9.5% methyl acrylate, 3.5% ethyl acrylate and 2% of acrylamide and N-methylolacrylamide in approx equimolar quantities.
