Abstract

A composition suitable for use in the treatment of carpets and pile fabrics to render then anti-static and resistant to soiling comprises an aqueous dispersion containing a polymer of a methacrylic ester, e.g. methyl or ethyl ester, and an anti-static agent which is a water-soluble salt, e.g. sodium salt, of polystyrene sulphonic acid or polyacrylic acid (obtained by hydrolysing polyacrylonitrile with sodium hydroxide to a degree of 70%. The aqueous dispersion may also contain e.g. Turkey Red oil or sodium cetyl sulphate.ALSO:Carpets and pile fabrics are rendered antistatic and resistant to soiling by impregnating or coating the fibres of the carpets or pile fabrics with an aqueous dispersion containing a polymer of a methacrylic ester and an antistatic agent which is a water-soluble salt of a polysulphonic acid or a poly-carboxylic acid, e.g. salts of polystyrene sulphonic acid or polyacrylic acid. The fibres may be treated prior to or after incorporating them in the carpet or pile fabric. Polymers of the methyl or ethyl esters of methacrylic acid or copolymers in which the methacrylic ester is copolymerised with a minor proportion of another ethylenically unsaturated monomer may be used. The aqueous dispersion may be applied by dipping, padding, spraying, brushing or with a furnishing roller and the fibres subsequently dried at temperatures up to 100 DEG C. The aqueous dispersion may contain up to 33% by weight of the polymer and up to 4% by weight of the polymer based on the weight of the fibres may be applied. The aqueous dispersion of the polymer may be produced by emulsion polymerisation in the presence of cationic or anionic surface active agents. The aqueous dispersion may also contain dispersing agents, stabilising agents, e.g. Turkey Red Oil and sodium cetyl sulphate, water repellents or wetting agents. Woven and tufted carpets comprising wool, regenerated cellulose, nylon, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene or polyacrylonitrile fibres and upholstery pile fabrics comprising regenerated cellulose, nylon or polyacrylonitrile fibres may be treated. Carpets may be treated when already laid on the floor and upholstery fabric may be treated already fitted to furniture.ALSO:Carpets and pile fabrics are rendered antistatic and resistant to soiling by coating the fibres of the carpets or pile fabrics with an aqueous dispersion containing a polymer of a methacrylic ester and an antistatic agent which is a watersoluble salt of a polysulphonic acid or a polycarboxylic acid, e.g. salts of polystyrene sulphonic acid or polyacrylic acid.
