Abstract

1451335 Flame retardant coatings WHITE CHEMICAL CORP 24 Oct 1973 [25 Oct 1972 (2)] 49530/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and Dl] A flame retardant coating composition comprises an aqueous suspension of a finely divided brominated organic compound and a finely divided inorganic, preferably metallic, oxide, the average particle size being below 2 microns and which are insoluble in water, and an aqueous emulsion of a high molecular weight polymeric binder. The composition may be applied to a substrate by padding or knife or brush coating followed by drying and baking at elevated temperature. It may form a layer on an already flame retarded substrate. Preferred brominated flame-retardants include (a) polybrominated mono- and polycyclic aromatic compounds, e.g. polybrominated benzenes, alkyl benzenes, phenols, biphenyls, terphenyls, polybrominated aromatic amines, mono- and polyacids, anhydrides and esters (including phosphate esters) and polybrominated bisphenol A; and (b) polybrominated cycloaliphatic compounds, e.g. polybrominated cycloalkanes (5- 12C), dibromo hexachlorocyclopentadieno cyclooctane and N, N'-ethylbis (dibromo norbornene dicarboximide). The preferred oxides are those of Al, Ga, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Bi, Ti and Zr. The binder may be an aqueous homo- or copolymer latex of acrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, or vinylidene chloride monomers, ABS, SBR or a polyurethane latex. The colloid may be a cellulose ether or ester. The material treated may be a textile in staple, tow, yarn, woven or non-woven fabric, circular or flat knit or carpet form, or a non-textile, e.g. a film, foam, paper or wood. The textile materials may be of cotton, linen, jute, coco fibre, regenerated cellulose, cellulose di- or tri-acetate, wool, silk, nylon, polyester, acrylics, polypropylene or glass fibre.
