Abstract

946,857. Needling fibrous batts. CHATHAM MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 2, 1962 [Oct. 4, 1961], No. 37226/62. Heading D1R. A needled fabric structure comprises at least two layers 12, 14 of fibres and a foundation 10 of synthetic material sandwiched between the layers 12, 14, the foundation having been permanently stretched in a warp-wise direction. The foundation may be either a scrim, i.e. a loosely woven fabric, or a warp of spaced apart yarns and may be made of polypropylene, nylon, cellulose acetate, acrylic, polyethylene, irradiated polyethylene or polyester fibres. The layers 12, 14 comprise batts which may be made of rayon, nylon, acrylic, wool or cotton fibres or a mixture thereof and which may be fed from carding machines or from rolls and are folded so that the fibres extend generally cross-wise to the feed direction. The fibres of the batts 12, 14 are needled into the foundation 10 by a needle loom 16 which may be of the type described in Specification 923, 762. The needled product passes between feed rollers 18, is subjected to heat by a suitable source 22 and passes between rollers 20 which are driven at a higher speed than the rollers 18 to stretch the warp of the foundation 10. This warp is maintained in a stretched condition for a sufficient length of time to allow for cooling and permanent setting thereof. In a modification, Fig. 3, the warp of the foundation 10 is plasticized by a solvent and/ or heat, the solvent being contained in a tank 32. The tank may be closed by a cover 33 and sealed for pressure operation when heat is used as the plasticizer. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the foundation 10 is plasticized by a solvent sprayed on to the fabric, excess solvent being collected in a tank and re-used.
