Abstract

1,162,604. Non-woven pile fabrics. SOC. SOMMER S.A. 25 April, 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 18969/67. Headings D1K and D1R. A non-woven pile fabric is composed of at least one web of tangled substantially continuous synthetic filaments and is characterised in that the filaments are oriented through the web and form loops protruding from one face of the web. The process for making the non- woven fabric is characterised in that there is formed a web of tangled synthetic substantially continuous incompletely stretched filaments, and that some of the filaments are driven through the web and at the same time stretched, to cause them to protrude in the form of loops from one of the faces of the web. The filaments are preferably oriented through the web by a needling process, the needles having a smooth shaft and at least two terminal points separated by a recess. The filaments may be broken during their orientation through the web. The web may be heated to the optimum stretching temperature for the filaments prior to the loop formation. In a further embodiment, the web is subjected to a humid heat 'treatment after the loop formation. During the passage of the web through the needle loom each loop may be successively subjected to the action of needles of increasing height. In a further embodiment the web is passed between a rotating cylinder having needles on its periphery, and a grooved bearing surface. The web may be needled prior to the loop formation and in a further embodiment, the web is attached to another web of completely stretched filaments. The face of the web through which the needles enter may be coated with a mechanically foamed plastics or rubber material which is allowed to gel.
