Abstract

920,202. Agglutinated fibrous fabrics; wadding; finishing paper. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. March 24, 1959 [March 24, 1958], No. 10165/59. Classes 42 (2) and 96. [Also in Group IX] A non-woven fibrous sheet fabric having openings therethrough is made by pulling a fibrous web, which has been sized with a solution of a fibre-bonding agent such as an acrylate polymer latex, while subjecting it to the action of needles which penetrate the web and vibrate in the plane of the web in a direction transversely of the direction of pulling. The web may be formed by carding and pressing staple fibres e.g. viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, nylon, polyester, glass or hemp fibres or mixtures thereof, which are interlaced and randomly positioned, or the web may be a water-laid tissue paper formed of such fibres and at an intermediate, or dried and completed, stage of manufacture. The needled web may be dried, with or without calendering, cut into sheets or slit and wound into rolls and/or it may be coated e.g. with abrasive particles. As shown, a dry carded web 1 is fed through squeeze rolls 2, 3, the lower of which dips into a bath of binding solution. The damped and compressed web is drawn between driven, oppositely rotated, needle cylinders 5, 6, the needles or wire teeth (card clothing) of which intermesh sufficiently to pierce the web from both sides. Cylinder 5 oscillates along its axis and the cylinder 6 rotates at the same speed as cylinder 5 but is restrained from such oscillation. The fibres are displaced by the action of the needles to form an apertured structure in the web. The moving web is dried by rotating heated cylinders 8, 9, 10, beneath a forced draft ventilating hood 11 and the binder is set thereby.
