Abstract

920,980. Fibrous fabrics. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 20, 1961 [Dec. 22, 1960], No. 44088/60. Class 42 (2). [Also in Group IX] Fibrous material, as may be used in the manufacture of filters, heat and sound insulation, gaskets, packing, wicking felts, papermakers' felts, spun yarn, carpet backing cloth, curtains and wearing apparel, comprises cut staple lengths, e.g. one to six inches, of filaments e.g. " as spun " waste, of cold-drawable synthetic organic polymer, predominantly lying in parallelized condition and interlaced by fibres in non-parallel positions in sufficient proportion to render the fibrous structure self-supporting. A proportion of the fibres have non-uniformly, partially, and/or undrawn portions along the length of each fibre, the birefringence of the fibre varying by at least 25 X 10<SP>-3</SP>. At least a proportion of the fibres are made from undrawn polyethylene terephthalate or stereo-specific polypropylene having birefringenres up to 0.16 or 0.003. The material may be made by cutting the undrawn filaments, at least a proportion of which have birefringence up to 0.005, partially elongating the fibres to at least twice their length at a temperature between -10‹ C. and 35‹ C. so that a proportion of the fibres are drawn intermittently and non-uniformly resulting in the specified birefringence variation e.g. by garnetting and carding, and then matting the resultant batt or web e.g. by needle punching. The material may be consolidated by a heat treatment e.g. steaming, which causes high shrinkage without fusing the fibres, and/or by compression e.g. between the platens of an hydraulic press. Specification 603,827 is referred to.
