Abstract

A non-woven fabric comprises randomly disposed fibres needle punched to form a dense, unretracted fabric wherein at least 50% of the fibres are bicomponent staple fibres having deniers between 0.5 and 20 and composed of 15-25% elastic fibre component and 75- 85% inelastic fibre component, the bicomponent fibres being capable of partial separation at an elevated temperature whereby the elasticity of the separated elastic fibres causes the inelastic fibres to assume a looped and coiled condition throughout the fabric. The elastic component is preferably spandex and the inelastic component is prepared from an acrylonitrile based polymer. A minor proportion of staple fibres of natural or synthetic materials may be mixed with the bicomponent staple fibres. The bicomponent staple fibres may also be mixed with continuous filaments. The fabric possesses the capacity to retract to a fabric having an immediate recovery of at least 70% from a 25% strain. In a preferred method of making the fabric, the fibres are formed into a web and needle punched to increase fibre entanglement, the web then being heated to produce partial separation and retraction of the fibres. The fibres are preferably presteamed and the web is preferably retracted by treatment with hot water.
