A knitted fabric comprises a rib base knitted from yarns of natural or synthetic fibres or filaments and incorporates in spaced, e.g. alternate, courses a bare elastomeric polyurethane yarn knitted in alternate wales and floated over the intervening wales, the polyurethane yarn comprising at the most 10% of the weight of the knitted fabric. The fabric is knitted on a cylinder-and-dial machine. The base fabric yarns may be any staple yarn of natural, semisynthetic or fully synthetic fibres, spun in pure or mixed form, or any .thread (smooth or textured) of such material. For example threads or fibres based on cellulose, polyamides, acrylonitrile polymers such as polyacrylonitrile, or polyesters may be used.
